With one of the lowest birth rates in the world, South Korea is in danger of disappearing by the end of the millennium. If the situation stays as it is, South Koreans are predicted to become extinct by 2750. Because of the rapidly aging population, elderly prostitutes known as "Bacchus ladies" have cornered a number of public parks as their working areas. Meanwhile, South Korean kids are living with their families well into their 20s—as a result, an entire economy of sex motels has sprung up to give kids a place to fool around outside the watchful eyes of their parents. "Exports of IT products and automobiles are expected to continue to grow, while it may take the shipbuilding industry, which is especially highly dependent on global economic trends, more time to recover." Samsung Group had the highest proportion of overseas sales, which represented more than 70-percent of its total sales from 2011 to 2013, followed by LG and Kumho Asiana. Connie Kim, Arirang News.

But 15 hour school days and academic pressure on students are beginning to take its toll, and the authorities are finally taking notice. "You get compared and because everyone does so well I feel pressured to do better. There's a lot of psychological pressure", says one Korean student. Here, making it to the top has become a national obsession. Schools stay open until 11pm, whilst half of teenagers report suicidal thoughts, mostly blaming school pressure. 19-year-old Jae-woo describes the stresses that accompany study for exams: "There's no me... I can't do things I like. When I'm prepping for exams, who I am just gets lost". Feeding off the system are entrepreneurs like Cha Gil-yong, a celebrity teacher who dons wigs and wacky costumes in online lectures. At any one time 300,000 students are logged into his website. "I try to entertain them and keep them from nodding off by wearing these wigs. Students really enjoy it", he says. Now, authorities are finally realising that the price of success may be too great, and are sending out patrols to enforce school closing times. Yet top performing students are even beginning to have plastic surgery in order to improve their job prospects. In a country where failure is not an option, how far will students go for success? Korea posted stable growth in 2014 in terms of outbound shipments and R&D investments,... but will Korean companies be able to maintain the momentum and protect themselves from external risks this year? Here′s our Song Ji-sun with the outlook. Korea fared relatively well last year, despite slowing global demand and a sluggish economic recovery at home. But the outlook for this year is not all that bright. The machineries and semiconductor industries are expected to enjoy growth this year, backed by steady demand from the U.S. Free trade agreements struck with a dozen countries in recent years have given a boost to the auto, auto parts and textiles sectors. But handset producers will be faced with tough competition in the global market especially in China, where cheap local manufacturers like Xiaomi and Huawei are quickly gaining ground on Samsung and LG Electronics. Chinese companies are catching up with Korean manufacturers in terms of their technological advances and their cheap prices and mass production capabilities helped their output surpass Korea′s, both in the shipbuilding and auto sectors. Considering that half of Korean export items compete with Japanese products on the international stage, the weakening Japanese yen remains a risk for Korean exporters. Industry analysts say companies need to stick to what they′re good at while improving their quality and reducing costs. "Companies must give up on sectors that are not performing well, and focus their resources and manpower on sectors that are excelling in the market." In fact, the overhaul has already started. Samsung sold its petrochemical sectors to Hanwha Group last year while Hyundai Steel acquired Dongbu Special Steel. Such M&As and restructuring will speed up this year. Song Ji-sun, Arirang News.

한국 조선, 새해 수주경쟁서 중일 제치고 1위 출발 Last month, Korean shipbuilders won more orders than any other country in the world, by far. The industry's been in serious trouble now for quite some time as it undergoes restructuring. But experts say that with so much uncertainty in the market for the rest of the year, it's too soon to call last month a sign of a recovery. Lee Unshin has more. Korean shipbuilders topped the global market last month, picking up half of all orders placed worldwide. Data from Clarksons Research Institute showed that in January the nation clinched orders worth 300-thousand compensated gross tons, or CGTs, out of 600-thousand CGTs globally. CGTS are a measure of the work needed to build a vessel, and the 300-thousand-CGT figure will see them build seven ships. China recorded the second-biggest order volume in January at 110-thousand CGTs followed by Japan at 20-thousand CGTs. Korea's order volume more than doubled the 130-thousand CGTs it got a month earlier, and dwarfed the 20-thousand CGTs seen the same month last year. However, in terms of order backlog, China has the most at 28.4 million CGTs, about 35-percent of the global total, while Korea has less than 20 million. Despite the turnaround for Korea last month, experts say it's too early to project how global shipbuilders will do for rest of the year. "Korea's January numbers are impressive, however we can't determine the market's direction for the coming months just from that. The nation's biggest shipbuilders have been seeing losses for the past few years, actually, due to fewer orders and more expensive materials." The expert adds that, more than the monthly figure, rising oil prices are a stronger indicator that the industry should be hopeful for this year. Local shipbuilders could see more demand for both vessels and off-shore plants. Lee Unshin Arirang News. With Korea′s domestic consumption picking up in recent months,... the need for a rebound on the EXPORT front has become all the more important. But according to Shin Se-min, shoring up leading export industries might not be that easy. Despite Korea′s outbound shipments posting a decline of ten straight months in October,… falling nearly 16-percent on-year, the country′s chipmakers,… put up a good fight. Samsung Electronics, the country′s top producer, is expected to rake in 11-billion U.S. dollars in operating profit this year,… while number two SK Hynix earned in 880-million just in the third quarter. But industry watchers are worried that looming ahead is a downward spiral for global demand. Already outbound shipments for chips in October fell seven-percent on-year,… down five-and-a-half billion dollars. ″The unit cost has more than halved, as manufacturers increased their production for D-RAM chips. On top of that, a slump in PC markets has dampened demand.″ New smartphones rolling out aren′t expected to prop up sagging demand either. Both Samsung and LG Electronics have been logging lower sales, after each reaching their pinnacles in 2013 and 2014. ″Korean automakers aren′t doing much better. In the first nine months of this year, Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Motors saw their overseas sales drop nearly three-and-a-half percent, compared to the same period last year. This, as Korean automakers are increasingly being squeezed out of the U.S. and Chinese markets as their price competitiveness erodes away.″ Under-performing Eurozone economies, weaker local currencies in emerging markets,…. as well as cheaper oil and material prices are just a few other factors driving down automobile shipments. And experts say the outlook for Korea′s exports will remain low for some time,… with no immediate sign of global demand picking up. ″Given the circumstances, local exporters will have to improve the quality of their products,… whether it be with lighter chips or diversified cars with green technology to outpace Chinese competitors.″ Shifting away from slowing China and towards countries like India, while stepping up exports on consumers goods is also key, as Korea is set to face long-term headwinds on the export front. 봉준호 "옥자 논란, 제 영화적 욕심 때문에 생긴 일" Now to an interesting story about the upcoming Netflix movie 'Okja.' A debate is raging about the film's simultaneous release in Korea... and how internet streaming services like Netflix could bring big changes to the way Korean movies are distributed in the future. Park Hee-jun has the story. "I feel positive about it." "I think it will push the movie industry forward." "I think that showing it on Netflix and trying to show it in the theater is problematic" The Netflix-funded movie ‘Okja' by Korean director Bong Joon-ho is due to be released both theatrically and online on the same date, on June 28, an unprecedented case for both the entertainment company and the Korea movie industry. The action-adventure film featuring names like Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal and which was premiered at the Cannes International film festival last month, has been highly anticipated by both critics and fans alike. But ahead of its release, Korea's three major movie exhibitors- CJ CGV, Megabox, and Lotte Cinema- are refusing to screen 'Okja' due to a three-week hold-back period widely practiced in the country. This means, unless Netflix, which specializes in streaming media and video-on-demand, holds off its release for three weeks, 93 percent of theaters in Korea will be shutting out director Bong's latest work. "I think big companies are afraid that Netflix would change the vertical profit structure that they have established. Netflix on the other hand, is likely to form a horizontal structure by simultaneously releasing the movie." Although the multiplex theater chains claim they are at a disadvantage, others believe the paradigm shift in terms of movie distribution could benefit the audience. "The streaming sites, streaming giants like Netflix or Amazon- they are affecting the industry as it continues to evolve. But they serve a purpose. They are able to meet a demand- people at home watch films and lots of different film" Although it's been more than a year that Netflix was launched in Korea, a country that boasts one of the fastest Internet infrastructures in the world making it a favorable environment for the platform,... the service is not as widespread as anticipated among Korean users. And yet, Netflix's unprecedented decision to release Okja on the same day as theaters might indicate changing times in Korea's streaming service industry. "Some people see Netflix as a threat, but online movie distribution is already an ongoing trend. Whether multiplex theaters and online streaming services can find a way to settle this controversy still remains an issue. Park Hee-jun, Arirang News." There are over 20,000 dog meat farms in South Korea. South Korea are the only known country to farm dogs for the meat industry. Many of these dogs live in appalling conditions. They are fed left overs, they never see a bowl of water, they never feel love, they suffer intense heat in the Korean summers and chilling cold in winters. Korea is well known around the world for numerous things: its pop music , its popular drama shows and its delicious food. Well, now there is another factor to add to the list: Korean games... that have seen their popularity explode on the world stage. Shin Se-min has more. More Korean games are being exported than Korean pop music,... According to a report released by the Korea Finance Corporation on Monday, the nation's game exports topped 2-point-6 billion U.S. dollars in 2012.. That is more than ten-times larger than exports of Korean music in the same year. The gaming figure refers to all online, video, mobile, PC, and arcade games being sold outside the country. The report says game-related exports also far outstrip those of knowledge information, movies, publishing, and advertisements. Korea's gaming industry brought in 1-hundred-80-million dollars in revenue in 2012,... with over 90 percent of that coming from online games. While video and arcade game sales have tumbled since 2011,... the growing prevalence of smartphones helped mobile games contribute to the overall boost in sales. The local industry has been doing very well in recent years, but Korea is still not a leading country in the global market. The U.S. and Japan top the international market share,... with over 18 percent each. China, Britain and Korea follow with 12, eight and six percent, respectively. Experts say fostering the right environment for industries such as games, movies, animation and design is crucial as they'll be able to create more added value in the future. Korean cars are the top quality vehicles by a growing stretch. Japanese brands on the other hand are slipping down the rankings table, falling below the industry average for the first time in 29 years. That's according to the latest J.D. Power Initial Quality Index report which has just been released. The study measures problems experienced by vehicle owners during the first 90 days of ownership. In terms of nameplates, Porsche (POAHF) ranked top for the third consecutive year, followed by Kia (KRX) and Jaguar (TTM). Infiniti (NIS) was one of the most improved brands in the study, coming in at number 5. Though vehicles are becoming more high tech than ever, technological advancements continued to cause problems for the industry. 'Smartphones have set high consumer expectations of how well technology should work, and automakers are struggling to match that success in their new vehicles,' said J.D. Power's vice president of U.S. automotive quality Renee Stephens. 'However, we are seeing some OEMs make important improvements along the way. What’s clear is that they can’t afford to wait for the next generation of models to launch before making important updates to these systems.' Stephens added. Overall, initial vehicle quality has increased by around 3 percent since last year.
