• The South Korean Love Industry

With one of the lowest birth rates in the world, South Korea is in danger of disappearing by the end of the millennium. If the situation stays as it is, South Koreans are predicted to become extinct by 2750. Meanwhile, South Korean kids are living with their families well into their 20s—as a result, an entire economy of sex motels has sprung up to give kids a place to fool around outside the watchful eyes of their parents. We sent Matt Shea to investigate this generational crisis, which led him to Seoul's red-light district, a pre-wedding photo shoot on the set of a Korean soap opera, and an erotic sculpture park on South Korea's "honeymoon ...

Korea's export-driven economy is still being driven by six industries, which can expect to expand even further in the future. Growth in other industries, however, has stayed flat in recent years. Connie Kim reports. Korean exports are still driven by the six industries that power the country's economy while growth in other industries has remained stagnant. Local market researcher CEO Score said Wednesday the combined annual overseas sales of 133 companies from 2011 through the third quarter of 2013 was more than 421-billion U.S. dollars. Of the total, 94-percent of the companies' overseas sales came from Korea's six main export industries -- IT & electronics, automobiles, construction, petrochemicals, shipbuilding and steel. During the same period, however, the telecommunications, pharmaceutical and transportation industries saw their overseas sales remain flat. CEO Score representative Park Ju-gun said the six major industries are crucial to the export-driven Korean economy and added that companies need to invest more to stay competitive. "Exports of IT products and automobiles are expected to continue to grow, while it may take the shipbuilding industry, which is especially highly dependent on global economic trends, more time to recover." Samsung Group had the highest proportion of overseas sales, which represented more than 70-percent of its total sales from 2011 to 2013, followed by LG and Kumho Asiana. Connie Kim, Arirang News.

But 15 hour school days and academic pressure on students are beginning to take its toll, and the authorities are finally taking notice. "You get compared and because everyone does so well I feel pressured to do better. There's a lot of psychological pressure", says one Korean student. Here, making it to the top has become a national obsession. Schools stay open until 11pm, whilst half of teenagers report suicidal thoughts, mostly blaming school pressure. 19-year-old Jae-woo describes the stresses that accompany study for exams: "There's no me... I can't do things I like. When I'm prepping for exams, who I am just gets lost". Feeding off the system are entrepreneurs like Cha Gil-yong, a celebrity teacher who dons wigs and wacky costumes in online lectures. At any one time 300,000 students are logged into his website. "I try to entertain them and keep them from nodding off by wearing these wigs. Students really enjoy it", he says. Now, authorities are finally realising that the price of success may be too great, and are sending out patrols to enforce school closing times. Yet top performing students are even beginning to have plastic surgery in order to improve their job prospects. In a country where failure is not an option, how far will students go for success? WATCH EPISODE 2: http://bit.ly/1OeX21u In i-D’s latest video series, tattoo artist and activist Grace Neutral explores how younger generations are challenging traditional views around beauty and body image across the world. Through a number of dramatic body modifications, Grace has evolved from self-confessed alternative weirdo to actual pixie dream-girl with purple eyes, pointed elf ears, a forked-tongue, scarification and no belly button. Interested in ideas of alternative beauty and pushing boundaries of positive body image, the 27-year-old navigates us through changing attitudes to how we look. In the first four episodes of Beyond Beauty, we follow the tattoo-covered alien princess to South Korea as she investigates the ways in which Seoul’s youth conform and challenge mainstream beauty ideals. Although it’s socially acceptable for teenagers to have cosmetic surgery within its six billion dollar domestic beauty industry, it is illegal to be a tattoo artist. From underground tattoo studios to specialist club nights, Grace meets the young South Koreans embracing alternative ideas of beauty and discovers the impact it has on their lives. Korea now ranks fifth in terms of global auto production and it′s number three in terms of auto exports. Ji Myung-kil takes a look back on the last 60 years of the Korean auto industry... and how comapnies like Hyundai and Kia have established themselves in the global market. It′s been 60 years since Korea manufactured its first car the Sibal back in 1955. The car, whose name translates as "new start," was created by adding a Korean engine to a U.S. military jeep Later, in the 60s, the Korean government announced series of measures to promote the auto industry. These efforts led to the establishment, in conjunction with foreign automakers,... of three automobile companies, two of which are still in business Hyundai and Kia Motors. With the technical assistance, Korea built its first modern assembly facilities and began assembling cars. Through continued collaborations with foreign car companies, Korea′s first homegrown automobile, the Hyundai Pony, was built in 1975. Hyundai chalked up another first when it exported the Pony to South America in 1976. Then, in the 80s, Korean automakers began focusing on developing mass-production systems to build an export-oriented industry. And on January 20th, 1986, Hyundai entered the U.S. market with its Pony Excel. It sold more than 168-thousand cars, setting a record for selling the most cars in its first year of business. Three years later, on the back of its initial success in the export market,... Hyundai began designing and producing vehicles with its own technology. Last year, overseas shipments of Korean vehicles stood at more than 3 million units and the value of Korea′s auto exports reached an all time high of nearly 49 billion U.S. dollars. Hyundai and Kia Motors said Tuesday they had exported one-hundred-thousand vehicles for each of 17 car models last year. Now, as they pass the 60-year mark, Korean automakers are plugging into the latest trend and developing eco-friendly vehicles. Ji Myung-kil, Arirang News.

삼성.LG, 미국 가전시장 장악...월풀도 제쳤다 Korean electronics giants, Samsung and LG Electronics are enjoying a solid presence in the U.S. household electronics market. With state-of-the-art technology and premium products, Samsung now has the biggest market share,... beating Whirlpool for the first time. Kim Hyo-sun reports. A refrigerator that orders your groceries. "SOV" "Add apple to shopping list." "Okay. Adding apple to shopping list." A robot that can turn on the vaccum or the oven. "SOV" "Okay, good. Pre-heat the oven." "The upper of the LG oven will start pre-heating." Every year, Korean manufacturers garner international attention at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, or CES. In the U.S., Samsung and LG Electronics have passed a new milestone, capturing the two of the largest market shares for five major household electronics items, including refrigerators and washing machines. Korea's number-one manufacturer of electronics, Samsung, topped the U.S. market last year for the first time with a 17-point-3 percent share,... beating America's long-time industry leader, Whirlpool. Korea's second-biggest electronics maker, LG,... came in third place with 15-point-7 percent. Their success overseas has been attributed to their continued innovation. "Every year, we introduced new products by analyzing the tastes of American consumers, who prefer innovative and large-scale home appliances. Our strategy of focusing on premium products in major markets including washing machines and refrigerators also proved successful." Samsung and LG, who are also top players in the mobile industry,... have a lead in state-of-the-art Internet-of-Things technology and artificial intelligence. However,... they can't allow themselves to get complacent. The Trump administration has hinted at high tarriff barriers, which could affect the two manufacturers who make some of their household electronics in Mexico. "Because they're more competitive in communications and display products, I think they can do even better when focusing on their areas of competitiveness while carrying out high-end strategies as well." Another challenge not likely to go away... is for them to stay ahead of their Chinese competitors who have been catching up fast. Kim Hyo-sun, Arirang News.
